Top spots for nice scenic walks within the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is a walk in the park literally: green undulating hills, villages awash with honey-stone gables and footpaths meandering to an idyllic vision on a postcard. The key is finding a trail that aligns with your comfort level (and footwear!).

Easy: quick wins

Great for fresh air and a little exercise without taking another full hike. Head out on small circular walks from villages, riverside paths and routes that end at a pub or café. Easy should be around 30–90 minutes, mostly flat and quick to turn back if it starts raining.

Moderate: village-to-village classics

This, for most first-timers, is the sweet spot. Choose a route between two villages, book yourselves in for lunch and then come back by another way (or get a taxi from the nearest place if you don’t wish to do the full circuit). Just be prepared for the couple of sustained climbs as well as, in winter, muddy patches but plenty of photo stops.

Harder: longer and hillier days

Get a longer ridge walk or pick an all-day route with real elevation if you want that “earned it” achievement feeling. Go early, bring food and calories for small breaks along the way. How to plan

Bring in some grippy shoes: there is so much mud in the Cotswolds, especially if there’s been recent wet weather.

Even in spring, pack a warm layer and waterproof.

Be aware of daylight timings and try to wind up before dusk.

Please keep to waymarked paths and remember to close gates behind you.

Two places most of us get wrong: planning too much distance and not enough time. You’re going to stop a lot in the Cotswolds as it’s so gorgeous!
