An Introduction to PMDD

Do you suffer from intense emotions and physical discomfort before your period starts? If so, you may have premenstrual dysphoric disorder, also known as PMDD. You are not alone and neither do you have to put up with the symptoms, as there may be treatments that can ease it.

The symptoms

PMDD usually happens in the week or two before your period in what is known as the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Emotionally, it is characterised by intense mood swings, increased irritability, heightened anxiety, a feeling of hopelessness or being overwhelmed, and a loss of interest in daily activities and hobbies. Physically, you may suffer from bloating, insomnia, and achy muscles. There can also be swelling or soreness in the breasts, fatigue, and loss of appetite. With this happening every month, it can have a significant impact on your quality of life.

There is much that is not known about PMDD, and research is ongoing, but it is thought the condition may be linked to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the way progesterone interacts with the brain. Lifestyle factors such as a poor diet and stress may make the symptoms worse.

Treatment

If you suspect you are suffering from PMDD, you should first consult your GP. They may refer you to a gynaecologist, an endocrinologist, or mental health services for ongoing treatment. There are also complementary therapies that many women find useful, such as Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, particularly in treating anxiety.

It is important that you find someone qualified to do this, so check the credentials and certification of any practitioners you engage with. If acupuncture interests you, look for someone certified by the British Acupuncture Council. An internet search will show you what is available in your area; for example, if you live in Tewkesbury, search for ‘acupuncture Tewkesbury’ and you will find results such as Purelands Acupuncture.

You may find that lifestyle changes can ease the symptoms, so it is worth making sure your diet is healthy and take regular exercise. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation have also been found to be effective.
