Caring For Your Tooth Extraction Site

Tooth extraction is a common procedure; the aftercare plays a pivotal role. It is very simple – you want to keep the blood clot that forms in the socket, as that will ultimately heal you. For a Dentist Bournemouth, consider //gentledentistry.co.uk

What’s normal after an extraction

For the first 24-48 hours, it is completely normal to experience:

Pain and tenderness from mild to moderate

Slight swelling (maximal at day 2)

Just spotting or very light bleeding, in particular on the day

A little bad taste, as the area is beginning to heal

Some bruising around the jaw.

Take your dentist’s advice, as per pain relief, and only eat soft food. Stay away from tobacco, spitting, using a straw, and vigorous rinsing (as this can get rid of the clot) for one or two days.

What is not normal (and needs advice)

Contact your dentist’s office if you experience:

Bleeding that will not stop with firm gauze pressure

Increased pain after 2-3 days (dry socket)

Increasing swelling after day 3, or swelling with fever

A foul smell or bad taste that is getting worse

Trouble swallowing, breathing, or opening your mouth

Numbness that doesn’t wear off.

When to call urgently

In case of difficulty breathing, severe swelling, or if you feel unwell with a high fever, seek immediate medical attention.

When in doubt, it’s better to give them a call. A much easier (and probably less painful) case to have checked during a routine check-up before it turns into something bigger.
