A beginners guide to boiler systems

If you are new to the housing market or just have never understood what a boiler does and what types are out there, then this guide is for you. It is important that you keep on top of any issues that arise too, and the best way to do this is to have some background knowledge.

A boiler is a heating appliance that generates hot water or steam in order to heat your home or building. It has various uses including boiling water for cooking, showering and central heating. This is achieved through the combination of putting water under pressure and the combustion of fossil fuels. Boilers burn fuel such as gas which is converted into heat and circulated around the room.

In order to choose the right boiler for you, it is helpful to have a brief understanding of the main types. Combi boilers are common choices for smaller houses or flats as it doesn’t require a hot water tank, producing instant hot water. However, water pressure can drop if you use more than one source at the same time. System boilers use hot water tanks usually in cupboards and can provide several outlets but can only provide a finite amount of hot water. Like conventional boilers, they can also be expensive to run. Conventional boilers are the traditional model that has multiple outlets, but they do rely on mains water pressure.

Boiler servicing must occur annually to ensure that there are no faults. Although this may seem excessive, this will encourage a long and healthy lifespan and you will not have to worry about more serious hazards arising in the future.

Recognising an issue early on is key, and so here are some signs of a faulty boiler. Strange noises such as a kettle boiling sound, a yellow flame instead of a blue flame on the hob, or simply a lack of hot water. Other issues are the pilot light being out or the radiators heating unevenly. Essentially, anything out of the ordinary is worth getting checked out.

To maintain the efficiency of your boiler you will need to be in annual contact with your local boiler company. Evesham boilers are a great example of engineers who can visit your home, answer queries, and fix any issues. If your boiler is more than ten years old, they may suggest a new one too, which although seems costly the long-term benefits will be favourable both economically and environmentally.
