What is the Passover

Of all the many Jewish festivals, the passover is one of the most celebrated and its most poignant. It commemorates the freedom of the Israelites from bondage and their quest to return to Canaan and the state of Israel. The passover features many symbolic foods to help remember the event and these are displayed on Seder Plates. These are an essential part of the ritual and a Passover meal cannot be conducted without one. Seder plates from Cazenove Judaica are some of the best that you can have, They are beautifully ornate and decorative.

The Passover story itself is one of sadness. After coming to Egypt for shelter and food the Israelites had become little more than slaves in Egyptian society. They had built and served for their masters and wanted to leave. Moses and his brother came to Pharaoh to ask for their release. Each time he refused.

Yahweh (God) reacted by sending a series of plagues. Small at first but mounting in severity. Pharoah ignored the first six, However the seventh was impossible to ignore. The Angel of Death passed over the country and took the first born child of every Egyptian family. The Jews were spared if they painted some lamb’s blood above their door. After this Pharaoh revealed that Yehweh was a powerful God and that the Israelites were his chosen people. He released them and the next 40 years saw them wander the desert before they finally made it home.
